El Laberinto del Fauno

Pan's Labyrinth

(Spain/Mexico/USA, 2006, 117 minutes)

In 1944 Spain, the young stepdaughter of a terrifyingly cruel fascist officer discovers she may be the princess of an underground kingdom she abandoned long ago. Dark fairytale fantasy for adults, extraordinarily imagined and crafted but not entirely successful in reconciling its two (rather powerful by themselves) narrative strands.
