Hairspray

In 1962 Baltimore, talk of the teenage town is the popular “Corny Collins Show”, and a chubby teenager decides to follow her dream of being a dancer in the cast. Screen adaptation of a successful Broadway musical based on the 1987 cult movie of the same name; where the original film was an affectionate spoof of youth exploitation movies, this wants to be the real thing, but despite the note-perfect production design, spot-on songs and game cast, it resolves itself in a series of well-staged but not particularly inventive musical numbers with the barest of connecting narrative.
