Fata Morgana

(West Germany, 1971, 76 minutes)

Plotless, conceptual documentary where images of modern-day Africa are illustrated by words from a Mayan creation myth. Esoterically non-linear composite of breathtaking visuals, classical and rock music and obscure voiceovers; not so much a film as an experience that will infuriate and delight in equal measure, but probably of little interest outside the director's fanbase.

A Werner Herzog Filmproduktion presentation/production. Directed and written by Werner Herzog; director of photography (colour), Jörg Schmidt-Reitwein; film editor, Beate Mainka-Jellinghaus.
