Stroszek

(West Germany, 1976, 107 minutes)

An alcoholic just out of jail moves to America with his elderly neighbour and his prostitute girlfriend in search of a better life that fails to materialise. Bleak, disturbing melodrama of broken dreams with a strong documentary component, that fails to follow conventional narrative arcs and works all the better for it.

A Werner Herzog Filmproduktion production. Starring Bruno S., Eva Mattes, Clemens Scheitz. Directed and written by Werner Herzog; director of photography (colour), Thomas Mauch; film editor, Beate Mainka-Jellinghaus.
